Grandma's Front Room

Originating during my masters exploratory stages, Grandma's front room came from remembering experiences within my childhood where I felt free to play unjudged. This is paintings in a naive and loose style relating to the concerts me and my cousin used to do in Grandma's front room. The aim of this work is to appeal to both adults and children, to make spaces where people feel like they can play and also relive memories from their childhood.

On winter days I go to Grandma’s,
I hug my cousin once a year,

She says half 1,
So we go to the front room,
We design tickets,
Cut them out and give them to unsuspecting family,

We design clap signs,

SHHHHHWWAAAAAA,
It wakes up,
All the buttons light up with many colours,
My feet can’t touch the peddles,
So I don’t bother,
The top keyboard sounds best,
So I start there,
While Lucy dances in the open space next to me,

We laugh and go to grab everyone,
And we play,
Lucy in the middle surrounded by sofa’s and chairs,

Big cushions,
Rocking chairs,
Sit down,
Sit down,

We start by looking,
Asking if the cousins want to join,
They never do,
We ask Grandma when lunch will be ready,

We practice,
To start playing,
I sit on the high stool,
Open a random page,
Put the notes up,
I turn it on,

The nuts left alone on the table,
Pictures everywhere,
Grandma’s wedding photos,
Us and people I dont recognise,
A cabinet by a large mirror,
From Great Grandma,
Filled to the brim with little ceramics,
Glass elephants,

I play twinke twinkle,
Then blowing in the wind,
And finally when the saints,
Oh when the saints,
She moves into shapes,
It looks like fun,
It lasts 5 minutes,
Lunch is ready.
